Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge has got massive batteries this time. They have 3000 mAh and 3600 mAh non-removable Li-Po batteries respectively. This large battery is capable enough to power the Galaxy S7 for more than a day under normal usage. Basically the power rating of the Galaxy S7's battery is 3.85V which can power any USB storage device like flash drive, OTG drive, some external hard drives like the latest Samsung Portable SSD T3 which weighs only 51 grams. Galaxy S7 fully supports OTG function and you can even connect a USB mouse, keyboard or a PS4 or XBOX ONE controller.
The good news is that you can charge your Galaxy S6, S5 or S4 with your Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge by just inter connecting them with cables. You can also move data by this method. See the image below.
Note: I haven't tested a wireless keyboard and mouse combo with a common USB transceiver. But since the wireless devices are battery powered then the keyboard and mouse combo will also work. With this combo you can use a mouse and keyboard simultaneously on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge.

Requirements
You should have at least one of the below mentioned USB storage or peripheral devices.
- USB Storage: Any pen drive, flash drive or SanDisk OTG drive for android.
- External Hard Drive: Portable SSD T3 or SSD T1 (250 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB)
- Peripheral Devices: Keyboards, wired/wireless Mouse or game controllers.
- USB OTG connector supplied by Samsung.
How To Connect USB Storage Devices To Galaxy S7
- Take the USB OTG cable or use the adapter that came with your phone.
- Plug in the storage device in the bigger USB port.
- Connect the smaller port to your phone.
- On connecting a notification will appear on your phone.
- Now you can use any file manager app to copy or move files to and fro.
- If you are using a Portable SSD T3 then you will need the official app for it that you have to install it on your phone. I will discuss about it later.
- You can connect a keyboard, game controller and a mouse similarly.
- For connecting a wireless mouse you should connect the USB nano-receiver to the OTG cable.
- Switch ON the wireless mouse and it will work.
Use Your Galaxy S7 As a Power Bank
With such a massive battery you can use your Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge as a Power Bank for charging other android smartphones. Since the micro USB port of S7 is not of Type-C, still you can charge your other smartphones. For this purpose you will need a normal data cable and an OTG cable/adapter. See the image below for connection.
When you connect like this then the phone with a smaller battery will automatically start charging by taking power from your Galaxy S7's battery.

you can also connect a wireless mouse or keyboard to the galaxy s7 using this adaptor, and you get a cursor when you do
ReplyDeleteYes, you are right. Thanks for the info, I have added it in the article.
DeleteI posted something before but I don't see it. I hope I'm not causing a duplication. Here's an abbreviated version...
ReplyDeleteHow do I "eject" the flash drive before physically disconnecting it? (Just tapping on the item in the notification pull down doesn't work.)
Go to Settings>Storage. Here you can find the USB drive. Tap on it to eject.
DeleteThank you! It works! (But feeling like an idjut. I actually tried that at one point. Didn't notice the "Storage." Sigh.)
DeleteWhat format does the usb drive have to be in? Ntfs doesn't seem to work for me
ReplyDeleteNTFS will not work. Use FAT32 only. Galaxy S7 doesn't support exFAT or FAT partitions.
DeleteBut doesn't extfat support all android devices ?
DeleteNo, exFAT is supported by some android phones only like Xperia Z. Not all android phones support exFAT. Use FAT32.
DeleteWhat format does galaxy s7 support?
ReplyDeleteIt would be good if you use FAT32 for your flash drives.
Delete"use any file manager app" -- I connected a USB mass storage device that's formatted FAT32 to my S7 Edge (US Snapdragon version), and the "storage" settings pane shows it as "unsupported" and wants to format and encrypt it. Every file manager app I've tried either doesn't show it at all, or asks for write permissions on it and then takes me someplace unrelated.
ReplyDeleteWhat's really maddening is if I look around in Connectbot's local shell, I can see that it's mounted in /mnt/media_rw. I can see all the files in it with ls. But I can't move the mount point somewhere more accessible or create a symlink because I don't have root.
Also this phone clearly DOES support exFAT. I put in a 200 GB MicroSD, which comes formatted exFAT, and it worked without any additional messing around.
Ignore the issue from my previous comment. My phone was acting strangely because the USB device was slightly faulty. When I connected a properly working USB mass storage device, it mounted normally and the Samsung "My Files" app was able to copy files to and from it easily. Just my luck that the first one I tried connecting to this phone broke on its way from my PC to my phone.
ReplyDeleteYou should not have any problem with exFAT or FAT32. These formats are fully supported by android. You can also connect an external hard drive but its partition should be exFAT. Don't use faulty USB drives.
DeleteHello, I have an usb connector and I try to connect a flash drive to my samsung galaxy s7 and nothing shows as if nothing was connected. My husband haves a s6 and it the same for him
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions on how to get it to work?
The connector might be faulty. I suggest to use an OTG drive not any connector.
DeleteAlternatively the USB flash drive might be faulty. So check both of them.
DeleteI tried to connect 2tb drive with my s7 edge but it is not working!
ReplyDeleteSame drive connected with s6 edge is working fine.
Used to use 1tb drive with s7 edge but 2tb is not working.
Drive is formatted t exFat.
Need Help!
External HDDs work with most android phones. But if the drive is not being detected by your S7 edge then it might be due to power issues. Try connecting 1 TB drive and check if it is being detected by your S7 edge.
DeleteIf the 2 TB drive is being detected by your S7 Edge then use ES file explorer transfer data.
